Paint Out Norwich 2016 Artists

From 15-18 October 2016, around 40 artists competed on the streets of Norwich, Norfolk for its third juried-entry Plein Air Paint Out art competition.

Selected Artists for Norwich

42 artists were chosen to compete at Paint Out Norwich in 2016. 33 were available to compete at the Norwich Core (26) and Nocturne Competition (18), and Freestyle (10) event streams:

Karen Adams

Karen works in large and small scale having exhibited in The Brancaster Staithe Midsummer Exhibition and painted murals for the Brancaster Staithe Sailing Club’s Annual Summer Ball. Her work is currently being shown at the Duck Inn, Stanhoe. Her preferred medium is oil in which she paints a variety of landscapes but particularly enjoys painting beaches – where she first encountered and participated in Paint Out Wells beach sunrise ‘paint out’ – marshes and boats in Norfolk and street scenes.

Rashmi Adiga

Rashmi says she loves “the idea of being absorbed in the moment when painting plein air” and only returned to painting, which she’d given up to train as a Doctor, to destress from her work as a paediatrician. She prefers water-based media and recently won Second Prize at a Wymondham Art society competition.

Paul Alcock

paul-alcock-elm-roadPaul trained at Camberwell School of Art, and for the last 13 years has worked as an artist and adult teacher. He has won the best work in exhibition prize at the Essex Open Exhibition in 2011 and has painted live with the BBC during their coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant. He also particpated as a “wild Card” in the Sky Arts Landscape competition in 2015. He loves “the chance to work alongside other artists.”

John Behm

John studied Drawing & Painting, Sculpture, and Architectural Design, in the US and at the Edinburgh College of Art. John has pursued a diverse career within art and design over 37 years, with exhibitions, commissions and sales across Britain, the US, and Europe. As well as being a published illustrator and writer on art, John has several public sculptures in Scotland and Norfolk, and work in public collections including the City of York, the National Museums of Scotland, the House for an Art Lover in Glasgow and the Coldstream Museum.

Richard Bond

Richard’s work has been exhibited in national group shows and painting competitions, including the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize Competition and the Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition. An article about his work and working methods in watercolour appeared in International Artist magazine (vol. 86). In the summer of 2013 Richard set up the Norwich Outdoor Painting Group, an informal group of local artists that meets once a week throughout the year to paint en plein air in Norwich city centre. Richard won the First Prize at Paint Out Norwich 2015.

Alfie completed a music degree at Leeds College of Music, specialising in singing and composition. As a member of East Anglia’s Artworks group, Alfie is a regular performer, musician and workshop deliverer in schools and as part of Aldeburgh Music. His artwork has been exhibited at the Spiral Gallery in Debenham, Winter Exhibition at The Frame Workshop in Ipswich (2014), Art Cafe in Glandford (2014), Blackthorpe Barn in Rougham (2014), Wiveton Hall Café in Norfolk (2014), #iLike in Woodbridge (2015), Easthorpe Church (2015) and Colchester Institute (2015). Alfie was recently awarded First Prize during Paint Out Wells-next-the-Sea 2016 and Second Prize in Wells, 2015, as well as a £500 Cass Art bursary award at Norwich in 2015. Tom Cringle

Tom has been exhibiting and selling work for nearly 20 years. Self-taught and working predominately in acrylic and oil, his first exhibition was in The Old Black Horse shop in Burnham Market. Tom’s work has further been featured in solo and joint shows which include: Fabulous Frames in Norwich, The Mall Gallery in London, The Flint Gallery in Blakeney and Aldeburgh Contemporary Art in Suffolk. He has recently exhibited at and been accepted by the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists.

Douglas Boyd Cross

The town and landscapes in Douglas’s work are reflective of his past profession as an architect. Line, colour and light are considered in the work he has recently taken up.

Chris Daynes was the runner up second prize winner at Paint Out Norwich 2014 and also won the People’s Choice Vote at Wells-next-the-Sea in 2015. Chris is a seasoned en plein air painter who works all over England in all weathers, “always a challenging and sometimes uncomfortable experience, very social and never dull”, he says.

Roger Dellar

Roger Dellar

Roger Dellar works from his studio in Surrey. He has a keen interest in people and their behaviour, and is fascinated by the way the play of light transforms a subject; either working in the studio or plein air. He is a member of The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, The Pastel Society, and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Since 1996 has been an active member of The Wapping Group. He has won numerous awards.

Anthea Eames says that the real challenge in her painting is not simply to record what is in front of her but to reveal the story beneath the surface, giving a true sense of place. She uses natural earth pigments, ochres, sand, chalk, plants, or whatever she finds, and mixes them with a variety of resins to achieve the desired effect.

Jack studied painting at Wimbledon School of Art and exhibits regularly. He currently has three landscape paintings in an exhibition at La Conca Arts Centre in Granada, Spain. Well known in Norwich as a portrait painter, he participated in Paint Out Wells-next-the-Sea (2015) and was awarded Third Prize for his en plein air work.

Wil Harvey

Wil Harvey is a retired doctor, largely self taught who paints enjoys painting en plein air the Suffolk landscape in both oils, and, pen, ink and wash. He teaches basic painting and drawing techniques to art clubs in his local area

Andrew Horrod

Currently based at Wimbledon Art Studios in London, Andrew’s work in watercolour, acrylic and pastel has been included in the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (2014), Federation of British Artists’ Friends Painting Day and Exhibition (2001, prize winner), Picture the Heath Festival in Hampstead, London (2013, prize winner), Images of Venice at Mall Galleries, London (2004), Chelsea Art Society Open 2012 – 2015, and The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition (2013, awarded Smith and Williamson Cityscape Prize).

Jerome Hunt

Jerome studied at the Wimbledon School of Art and has pursued since more direct painting from the subject, whether in the context of still life in the studio, or in the field. He finds this process to be the “most visually nourishing and sets challenges which realise and enhance the skills which make good paintings. My artistic direction has been unwavering in the pursuit of a fascination with modern impressionism.”

Auriol Innes

auriol-innes“I think I’m at my best when responding with urgency to a subject, to the drama of being there, the sensation of light, vastness – whatever is demanded. I’m spurred on by the balancing act of steadying a surface in high wind, keeping my paints from rolling away, getting something down … before the Fell Ponies run dance away with my paper.” Auriol has had individual exhibitions with the Cadogan Contemporary in London, and group shows with the RA Summer Exhibition, Cley 16 and
exhibits regularly with the Norfolk collective of artists, Group-Eight.

Brian Korteling

Brian’s en plein air paintings and ‘Pixels’ en plein air work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. A selection includes: Somerset Art Fair, Somerset (2015), Spitalfields Art Market, London (2015), War and Peace at The Undercroft, Norwich (2015), Landmark Art Fair, London (2014), Earsham Street Gallery, Beccles (2013), The Reepham Gallery, Reepham (2012), and Studio Art Gallery, Norwich (2011). Brian was commended at Paint Out Norwich 2015 and came Third at Paint Out Wells 2016.

Tom Lamprell

Since finishing his Bachelor of Arts at Byam Shaw School of Art in London Tom has been based out of a barn studio in Honingham, Norfolk. In January 2016, a fire destroyed his studio and hundreds of paintings. His style is expressed not so much in the content of his work but rather through his choice of techniques and materials. Tom was one of the artists involved in giving Tombland’s Samson and Hercules statues a multicoloured makeover in 2012.

David Lindsay

David has been painting and exhibiting since completing his BA in Fine Art at Bristol in 1987 and a Master of Fine Art at Newcastle in
2001. He has worked as a community artist, before training in Art Therapy. He has exhibited widely and has work in many private collections in the UK and abroad. He is renowned for work that is colourful and painterly and has taught on colour theory. As well as mainstream expressionism he also enjoys the work of outsider artists, children and adults with learning disabilities. He regularly shows with the Norwich 20 Group of which he is a member.

Sue Mann

Susan studied at Falmouth School of Art and West Surrey College of Art & Design. She works in her own studio-crafted oils for superior pigment and texture and paints en plein air all year round. Solo shows include Labyrinth at the National Trust Visitor Centre, Gower (2014), Oriel Bach, Swansea (2014) and Pontardawe Riverside Centre (2012). She delivered a workshop in Egg Tempera traditional methods of paint materials creation during Paint Out Norwich 2016 and also competed at Paint Out Wells 2016. She often paints en plein air direct from an easel mounted on her bicycle.

Owen Mathers

Owen, an illustrator and designer, first
discovered oil painting at Wymondham College before going on to art school at the Norwich School of Art & Design in 2003. He is “inspired by being surrounded by amazing architecture, diverse cultures and so many people”, and feels the need to document the world around him,  drawing from life, in order to “capture fleeting moments and the individual charm of people and places in person.”

Robbie Murdoch

Whilst having studied dentistry, Robbie spent much of his spare time sketching and watercolour painting plein air. Upon retirement, he has concentrated on oil painting plein air. His “objective is to reveal the beauty and atmosphere of a subject by paying particular attention to the light and the weather.” Whilst seascapes and boats are of particular interest, he has travelled extensively to pursue his passion as well as studying at the Heatherley School of Fine Art.

Robert Nelmes

“I enjoy capturing the essence of what makes each landscape unique, be it the light, a majestic mountain range or the vastness of the ocean and now the big skies and patchwork landscape of Norfolk draw me in.” My preference is to paint in oils but increasingly
watercolour, with its convenience and unique set of challenges, along with the plein air pressure and “greater sense of urgency, with a level of intensity and concentration unique to the discipline.” He has taken part in Sky Arts landscape artist of the year 2015 and teaching landscape painting in Italy as well as getting out into the local Norfolk countryside.

Eloise O’Hare

Eloise’s political cartoons have been published in VN magazine in Netherlands and been included in several books and online websites. She is a full-time professional artist having shown work in Gallery Norfolk’s Summer Show (2015) and Dandifest! (2015). After coming Third at Paint Out Norwich 2015, she has become more visible and popular in galleries. Painting is her passion and she describes landscape painting as good for her soul. She paints in dip ink pen and watercolour as it gives “the feeling of movement and joy”, a style she started painting in after sitting on Cromer beach. More about Eloise O’Hare and her paintings

Marian O’Hare

Marian studied art as a bursary kid teenager at Central St. Martins school. After college she worked at Glyndebourne Opera house and the Old Vic theatre in sets, props and costumes. She is part of a family of successful artists, her husband being a film set designer and her daughter, Eloise, a previous Paint Out prize winner. She has only properly taken up art in later life, she is 75, but paint alongside others still painting in their 90s!

Tanya Pawsey

Tanya graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art painting and printmaking in 2004 and after doing a PGCE with a view to becoming an art tutor temporarily set aside art to have a family. Having returned to art, she won Second Prize at Paint Out Wells 2016 in her first competition. She says she is “thrilled with the revival in plein air painting and the events that bring artists together”.

Susannah Penrose

Susannah studied Fine Art at Bath Academy of Art and The City and Guilds College of Art in Kennington, London. For over 30 years, she has been the artist and colour-matcher for restoration teams countrywide. Skilled as a colour matcher, she has over 25 years of work on the painted ceilings at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Susannah paints murals and one of her largest commissions was to recreate 15 elaborate painted panels for the ceiling of the Grill Room at the Café Royal in Piccadilly, London.

Sarah Poland

Sarah Muir Poland is a colourist painter inspired by the landscapes of Suffolk, she had her debut, solo exhibition at the Aldeburgh Gallery in July 2015 which was very well received. Since then she has been invited to join over 70 artists taking part in Art for Cure in April 2016. She is currently working on a series of Scottish Landscapes of the Hebridean coastline following a trip last year and is working towards an exhibition in Scotland at the end of the year.

Michael Richardson

Michael was educated at Ipswich College of Art and later in Paris. His work has been exhibited in the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours’ shows at the Mall Galleries and at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Michael is a member of the Wapping Group of Artists (probably the oldest outdoor painting society in the UK), The Chelsea Art Society, and council member of the United Society of Artists. He is also a founder member of the Brass Monkeys Art Society, a hard core group of winter outdoor painters. He won the inaugural Paint Out Norwich Nocturne Prize in 2015 and regularly delivers workshops during Paint Out events. More about Michael and his paintings…

Claire Stevens

Claire Stevens

Claire enjoys expressing herself in a variety of ways including painting, printing, and textile design. Concentrate solely on her visual expression she gained a BA Hons in ‘surface pattern and printed textile design’ at Leeds college of art. Since then she has spent some time creating prints for fashion companies and has illustrated a series of novels. She won the public mass paint out with her mixed media work on Mousehold Heath, as part of Paint Out Norwich 2015.

Pat Tinsley

An intuitive and expressive conceptual artist with work fashioned in mixed media and watercolour, Pat draws heavily on the landscapes and imagery of Norfolk where she’s been a regular visitor for thirty years, and where she finally settled when she and her husband moved to Lammas from North London. She taught Art and Design in schools for many years and feel very comfortable talking about works in process and the interaction with public passers-by.

Corrin Tulk

Corrin originally had an extensive career in Commercial Interior Design in London before entering study again with a BA Illustration 2004 and MA Fine and applied Arts practice at University of Hertfordshire in 2007. She was involved in Cley 16 ‘Norfolk Now’ this year. Her work explores sacred land and pathways. She has found painting inspiration in the Cathedral Cloisters by the walking meditations of both current and historic of Benedict monks, Vicars, Lay community and general public.

Sue lives in South Norfolk and takes her inspiration from her surroundings and extensive travels. She likes to explore every aspect of her environment and enjoys the challenge when finding new and previously untried subjects. Working principally in oil or watercolour Sue’s style is representational in content and she enjoys the use of high colour wherever possible.
