For 2017 public paint outs and workshops including the 17 September Wells sunrise paintout see here

On 11 September 2015 members of the public were invited to join 24 selected Paint Out Wells artists in an early morning beach ‘paint out’ with 5 art material prizes from £25-£100 sponsored by CASS Art available to public entrants. Whether you enter to win or for fun, we welcome artists of all ages and abilities to join in a mass-spectator event from sun-up on the Friday morning after our main competition days (9-10 September).

David Hockney would wake early on summer mornings to draw the dawn:

“It’s at its most beautiful…when the sun has been up a little bit and you get its shadows…Most people sleep through it…Would Turner have slept through such terrific drama? Absolutely not! Anyone in my business who slept through that would be a fool. I don’t keep office hours.” – Martin Gayford, A Bigger Message: Conversations with David Hockney

The event will be open from 6am-midday. The Paint Out competition artists will be there until 10am if you want to paint alongside them for inspiration. This means you could be there at 6 o’clock and finished by 9-10am, or have a more leisurely start, finishing by midday, depending upon when you want to catch the sunrise and the changing light that is both the beauty and challenge of en plein air art work.

Please meet at the old lifeboat station where a Paint Out banner will be flying, and team members and volunteer stewards will guide and advise you further.

Artists can spread out in the vicinity and choose suitable vantage points anywhere in the surrounding area or over towards the Beach Huts on the main beach. However we encourage artists not to wander too far apart so volunteers are not over-stretched in assisting you and so that spectators can view works in progress. High tide is at 6.00 am and sunrise around 6.30am and this may limit the scope for ranging too far.

“Sunrise paints the sky with pinks and the sunset with peaches. Cool to warm.” – Vera Nazarian

Paint Out competition participants will have their work exhibited automatically. Other public Sunrise artists can then deliver their work for a Paint Out stamp at the Sackhouse Gazebo hub just at the back of the Maltings. Maps and signs from the harbour/Albatros will guide you to the Sackhouse.

There is limited space at the exhibition on the Buttlands. Therefore, Paint Out will exhibit the top twenty public pieces, chosen by one of the Paint Out Wells judges. These will be exhibited at the main event on Friday 11th that evening until Sunday 13th at 5pm.

Public Sunrise artists should affix sufficient secure fixings either on the back of frames or (if unframed on the back of the surfaces) to facilitate hanging. Paint Out has the right to exclude any work that is insufficiently prepared for hanging.
