Just before Christmas, Paint Out Norwich ran a Plein Air winter nocturne event to close out the year. Fifteen plein air artists braved the cold and Stephen Johnston came first winning a bottle of seasonal cheer in the form a nice Champagne for his 16 x 20-inch oil painting of Jarrolds at night. Quite a large canvas and completed in around 2 hours. Impressive.

Its bold brush strokes and dark bluish hue created a strong impression as Christmas shoppers went in and out of his chosen subject. Definitely some Monet and van Gogh by night influences.

One artist, Emily Faludy – a veteran of the last two Paint Out Norwich plein air art competitions and winner of one in the oil category, came up all the way from Hampshire for the evening painting event.

She appropriately titled her Red Lion St (from Orford Hill) painting ‘Starry Night, Norwich’ – reminiscent of both the Don McLean song and of the title of Vincent van Gogh’s 1889 painting, ‘The Starry Night’, which it references.

First Nocturne

It was an evening of firsts as it was Stephen Johnston’s first nocturne, along with other artists like Eleanor Alison and Patricia Harper who were painting nearby and also attempting their first nocturnes. Paint Out had also joined forces with the Norwich Outdoor Painting Group, about half of whom had done Paint Out events before. Among them was a previous Paint Out winner, Richard Bond who was also painting his first nocturne in oils, previously he had tried watercolour at night. He chose to paint from under a streetlamp, minus the minor lamp headgear that some artists sported but which can get in the way of natural colour and lighting. Whatever the artists’ choices of lighting assistance or none, nocturnes are an interesting challenge and sometimes a surprise seeing how they turn out the next day in daylight.

Stephen had an unforeseen problem painting Jarrolds from outside of the Halifax because their neon-lit sign kept rotating in different colours casting inconsistent lighting across his canvas and palette to add to the difficulties of painting at night. Whilst storefront lighting was a distraction for Stephen, for another artist, Eloise O’Hare, the Jarrolds’ window display with a busker playing outside was the attraction. Her painting won an honourable mention for showing a different side to the city at night and in a different painting medium.

Plein Air Nocturne Locations

The city of Norwich looks beautiful at night but even more so during the season of Christmas lighting which is mostly tasteful not tacky – although, like art, which is which is always a personal view. Locations painted at included Jarrolds, the top of the Market looking across to the Castle or St Peter Mancroft, Timberhill, the Forum and Christmas Market, and St Andrew’s Halls.

Nocturnes were first introduced to our plein air painting competition events in 2015 and have been a fond feature of many artists since, pushing their practice under different and difficult conditions. Using a more limited palette, often finishing in just 2 hours, but having one hidden benefit – the light barely changes because it’s gone!

Many of the nocturne paintings, including the winner by Stephen Johnston, are available for sale, contact us to check on availability and price, if interested.

James Colman launching Paint Out Norwich 2015

Paint Out as the first event of the Hostry Festival will continue to innovate and surprise in 2016. Prizes will be awarded for individual categories of medium for the first time, allowing artists recognition in their chosen areas.

We are also introducing a ‘freestyle‘ untimed event to encourage larger work to be made on the streets of the city as well as an expanded Nocturne event to capitalise on the exciting results from last year.

I’m really pleased to announce that we will be partnering with Norwich Framing Centre, Anteros Art Centre and North Café/Bar to provide artists with improved pre-exhibition facilities, workshops, as well as seminars on marketing and social media skills.

Paint Out is the only juried en plein air art competition in the UK. Our ambition is to provide a platform for Plein Air Art in Norwich with a global reach. We look forward to seeing you in October.” – James Colman, Paint Out

Three Art Competition Event Streams

After its successful introduction last year Paint Out continues to encourage experienced and adventurous artists to try their hand at Nocturne painting.

There are now three competition event streams, and artists can enter either the classic Core event or the new ‘Freestyle‘ event, and/or the Nocturne event.

  • Core event (judged in three separate media categories)
  • Freestyle event over 2 days
  • Nocturne event

New ‘Freestyle’ for Larger Longer Artworks

The new ‘freestyle’ event is for larger work of up to 3m2 to be completed without the Core event time limit of three hours per work, instead allowing a full 2 days for its creation. The artwork still has to be wholly completed out of doors, without the aid of photography and signed back in and the end of the day.

“We are looking to push the boundaries of plein air painting and see what it draws out.”

Freestyle art will be judged within its own category, irrespective of media type, and is not in competition with the three Core event media areas. Nocturnes will be judged according to Core event rules.

Expanded Workshops & Seminars

An expanded range of workshops, talks and seminars will seek to make Paint Out Norwich an educational and inspirational, as well as practical, opportunity to explore and improve your art practice.

Regional press and television – the EDP, Norwich Evening News, and Mustard TV – covered the announcement of further details about this year’s Paint Out Norwich en plein air painting competition.

Mousehold Heath, Norwich

Paint Out Norwich 2015 announcement, Norwich Evening News, 31 March 2015

Mousehold Heath, overlooking Norwich’s historic views, will be among new and additional locations taken on by up to 50 jury-selected artists.

Mousehold Heath set to feature in return of art competition celebrating Norwich … including a mass painting event which will see all the artists gather together at Mousehold Heath to paint the city’s skyline on October 22″, Norwich Evening News

In Tudor times, Mousehold Heath once stretched as far north as South Walsham and was then 22 miles round in size. It is a historic site that has been a part of a battle, Peasants’ revolt and was the location of the 16,000  men of Kett’s rebellion before they stormed Norwich.

Mousehold Heath has featured in famous paintings by several of the Norwich School of Artists, including John Crome and John Sell Cotman, as well as the Norwich born novelist and artist, and former Lord Mayor, RH Mottram.

Up until the early 1900s, Mousehold Heath was open countryside with few trees –

“a classic heathland landscape. The area was kept open by grazing animals and by local people collecting bedding and feed for livestock and fuel for the winter. As the way people lived changed, these traditions disappeared. This resulted in a gradual loss of open heath to scrub and woodland.” Read more about Mousehold Heath’s history and conservation.

“We are very excited about doing Paint Out Norwich again and that we are expanding it to include more artists. We are also going to diversify the programme so that we keep our core event from last year but on top of that we are going to have a select number of artists doing a nocturnal event that will run parallel to the day event.”, Norwich Evening News

“On two nights there are going to be a limited number of artists out on the streets painting illuminated Norwich“, Mustard TV

Confirmed Paint Out Competition Details

It is confirmed therefore, that the 2015 Paint Out Norwich competition will have 3 painting days and 2 nights 20-22 October, with an auction and exhibition in the 2 weeks following.

“Just by the sheer enthusiasm of people in Norwich responding well to all the artists’ work we feel this is an exciting prospect and I think it will grow and grow– James Colman, Mustard TV
