Paint Out took to a double-decker bus for fresh plein air views of Norwich

Plein Air paintout from an open-top bus!

Paint Out‘s first public en plein air art event of 2017 saw a dozen or so artists find fresh views and a new perspective of Norwich seen across the Market to the Castle, the Guildhall, and St Peter Mancroft, on a sunny bank holiday weekend Sunday.

The vision of James Colman to keep landscape artists challenged by looking at the urban environment in new ways has seen a hundred artists gather on Mousehold Heath in 2015 for panoramic views of Norwich, and in 2016 saw artists amass in Tombland and take to canoes on the River Wensum.

Last weekend was the turn of an open-top double-decker bus, supplied by Dolphin Travel with amiable driver, Andrew – who also supplied the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack that kept the artists painting in the hot sun during the afternoon session.

As well as members of the public including an artist’s teenage son joining in, there were Paint Out regulars including the artists: John Behm, Mary Brady, Karen Adams, Jack Godfrey, Mary Kallagher, and James Colman himself.

Some artists like Jan Halliwell travelled down from Lincolnshire to join the Norfolk paint out on the streets of the city, alongside the bus.

Paint Out welcomes experienced artists to its juried-entry art competitions but also runs public entry paint-outs for artist of all ages and abilities to encourage people into discovering and furthering their artistic creativity.

Art skills workshops were run the day before to tutor budding and honed talents alike.

The Paint Out Bus will return

“The Paint Out bus this weekend provided us with a fantastic hub from which to tell the world about our forthcoming 2017-18 programme plans. Our artists found their elevated experience inspirational.

For contestants at Paint Out Norwich and Wells, it provides a great add-on for our Nocturne and main events and provides a forum with which to engage with the public. Chameleon-like, expect the bus to take on many guises in its quest to take plein air painting across the UK.” – James Colman

Future Paint Out events

Paint Out will be popping up again as guests of the two-day Royal Norfolk Show, June 28-29, and then at our full plein air painting competition events at Wells-next-the-Sea, 15-17 September, and at Norwich, 15-17 October.

In this session, Nial will share some of his knowledge on the aspects of creating tonal value in your artwork. You’ll be working in oils on canvas, with a restricted palette. The 2016 plein air art competition saw 33 artists create over 150 works painted outside in changeable weather across 3 days including the public Tombland paint out.

16 prizes were awarded, the first of which went to Sue Mann, renowned for painting from a bicycle, who won this year’s Spirit of Plein Air Award for being the first to take the plunge and paint from a canoe.

This year we innovated again by running a ‘Freestyle’ larger form, 2-day, event alongside our classic Core event of 4 separate 3-hour painting sessions. Our groundbreaking Nocturne event returned for its second year with an increased number of submissions.

The Oils category saw second place go to Roger Dellar, and first place to Chris Daynes for “The Yellow Canoe” which also won the overall First Prize and a £1000 in total including his category win, sponsored by Strutt & Parker. We are also grateful to Archant for sponsoring several second placed prizes as well as the Watercolour and Mixed Media categories.

In addition, the three judges – David Curtis, Sue Grayson Ford, and Nick Holmes, also commended oil paintings by Jerome Hunt “Cathedral Facade Shadows”, Tanya Pawsey, “Swans from Bishop Bridge”, and the mixed media piece by Claire Stevens, “Oldest Iron Bridge”.

The Paint Out Norwich 2016 competition, with multiple categories, saw 16 awarded prizes in total, old and new locations, and continues to provide artistic challenges and opportunities for both seasoned plein air professionals and aspiring amateur artists. Over 180 artists registered an interest this year, with over 40 being accepted into the third-year of Paint Out Norwich. 33 took part, producing 140+ paintings in the exhibition.

The art exhibition runs from 19-29 October at the Norwich Cathedral Hostry, access is also open during other arts, literature, music, and theatre events of the Hostry Festival. Over 140 artworks are on display from the artists aged 26-75, some of whom – including a mother and daughter pair – took to Pub and Paddle‘s canoes to paint from the waterline of the River Wensum, discovering new and old views of the city alike.

Message from James Colman

James Colman launching Paint Out Norwich 2015 photo by Matt Dartford
James Colman launching Paint Out Norwich 2015

Paint Out as the first event of the Hostry Festival will continue to innovate and surprise in 2016. Prizes will be awarded for individual categories of medium for the first time, allowing artists recognition in their chosen areas.

We are also introducing a ‘freestyle‘ untimed event to encourage larger work to be made on the streets of the city as well as an expanded Nocturne event to capitalise on the exciting results from last year.

I’m really pleased to announce that we will be partnering with Norwich Framing Centre, Anteros Art Centre and North Café/Bar to provide artists with improved pre-exhibition facilities, workshops, as well as seminars on marketing and social media skills.

Paint Out is the only juried en plein air art competition in the UK. Our ambition is to provide a platform for Plein Air Art in Norwich with a global reach. We look forward to seeing you in October.” – James Colman, Paint Out

New & More Prize Categories

The enhanced range of new prize categories means that there are more opportunities to win and/or push yourself in new areas. There will be separate and distinct winner and runner-up prizes in the following categories or media:

  • Oil Painting
  • Watercolour & Gouache
  • Other including Mixed Media, Acrylic, Pastel, Pen & Ink etc
  • Freestyle over 2 days
  • Nocturne

In addition, there will be Judge’s commendations, a People’s Choice Award, and Spirit of Plein Air team prize. Additional prizes or awards may be announced later but we continue to ensure that there’s plenty of chances of winning and receiving recognition for your art.

Three Art Competition Event Streams

After its successful introduction last year Paint Out continues to encourage experienced and adventurous artists to try their hand at Nocturne painting.

There are now three competition event streams, and artists can enter either the classic Core event or the new ‘Freestyle‘ event, and/or the Nocturne event.

  • Core event (judged in three separate media categories)
  • Freestyle event over 2 days
  • Nocturne event

New ‘Freestyle’ for Larger Longer Artworks

Artist Tom Lamprell painting from the Sir Garnet by Norwich Market at Paint Out Norwich 2015

The new ‘freestyle’ event is for larger work of up to 3m2 to be completed without the Core event time limit of three hours per work, instead allowing a full 2 days for its creation. The artwork still has to be wholly completed out of doors, without the aid of photography and signed back in and the end of the day.

“We are looking to push the boundaries of plein air painting and see what it draws out.”

Freestyle art will be judged within its own category, irrespective of media type, and is not in competition with the three Core event media areas. Nocturnes will be judged according to Core event rules.

Expanded Workshops & Seminars

An expanded range of workshops, talks and seminars will seek to make Paint Out Norwich an educational and inspirational, as well as practical, opportunity to explore and improve your art practice.

Paint Out Norwich 2015 Exhibition Choice People’s Favourite Artist Liam Wales

Paint Out People’s Choice winner strikes again, EDP 2015-11-14

The Paint Out Norwich Exhibition Vote People’s Choice award was won again in 2015 by artist Liam Wales. When Liam first entered Paint Out in 2014 he was also the overwhelming Archant/EDP People’s Choice vote winner at the Hostry Festival exhibition of paintings. As well as receiving £100 and a Judge’s commendation from David Curtis for his St Giles on the Hill painting (see below) he wins an additional £100 prize cheque, courtesy of Archant. His unmistakable draughtsman-like style of charcoal or pen and ink, with occasional colour wash, has stood out two years running. He has a quirky love of bikes and cars that has seen them feature in many of his works.

About Liam Wales

Liam says he likes to “work quickly with a fluid line which gives each drawing a particular spontaneity.” Every artist was given 3 hours to complete each art work, and on several occasions Liam has wrapped up early.

“I really enjoyed the interaction with the other artists and the public. Because I like to work quickly, I also enjoyed the restricted timescale for producing the artwork.”

When not out doing en plein air drawings and paintings Liam works doing reconstruction paintings for English Heritage, and as an illustrator in London, “producing hand drawn visuals for Architects who are tired of seeing so many computer generated images.”

He comes from a long line of artistic family members who have all encouraged him to draw. What he loves about Norwich is its:

“diversity of impressive views and quirky details and a receptive public who seem to like creativity.”

He has recorded many Norwich views including the iconic Royal Arcade, an art work whose detail shows off his architectural and artist’s eye at one and the same time.

100 Artists Paint Norwich from Mousehold Heath mass Art Event

Mousehold Heath filled with 100 Artists

A fantastic turnout of well over 90 people, by some counts 100+, amassed on Mousehold Heath yesterday. Not a reenactment of the 1549 Kett’s Rebellion but a mass art event with dozens of artists painting side by side the skyline views of Norwich before a beautiful sunset descended.

The light changed frequently adding to the en plein air challenge of painting a changing scene with the distraction of public gaze, press filming, bemused dog-walkers, and kids either rolling on the green hillside or picking up crayons to draw their own young masterpieces.  The attraction of the varied views and inspiration of so many fellow artists of all ages and abilities made the event a resounding success, and one we will no doubt repeat.

One of the judges for Paint Out‘s core and nocturne event prize awards, David Curtis, also took up his easel and palette to paint. Renowned local ‘pop artist’ Colin Self was also about the Heath planning to do a brass rubbing.

The Big Draw

Artist Jack Godfrey draws the skyline from Mousehold Heath at Paint Out Norwich 2015
Artist Jack Godfrey draws the skyline from Mousehold Heath at Paint Out Norwich 2015

The event proved to be a big draw, bringing people not just from Norfolk but several driving 3-4 hours from Kent and Yorkshire just to take part in the public spectacle. October is also the month of the world’s biggest drawing competition – The Big Draw, with events taking place all month, so it was appropriate for art in all its forms from pens to paint, brass-rubbing to mixed media collage, to be taking place on the Heath.

Art for All Ages and Abilities

Artist Susannah Sendall creating art on Mousehold Heath at Paint Out Norwich 2015
Artist Susannah Sendall creating art on Mousehold Heath at Paint Out Norwich 2015

Unlike our juried entry main Plein Air competition this event was open to all-comers by prior registration and nearly 60 signed up to join around 40 Paint Out artists. Many just showed up on the day and braved the initially ominous but turning-out-to-be beautiful weather. All ages from 5 to 85 were represented including whole families treating art on the Heath as a creative day out. Picnic blankets filled with pens and paints, rather food and fizz, filled the undulating slopes as people sought the best positions to paint the landscape.

Three generations of one family took part – from grandmother to mother and daughters. The artistic East Anglian Sendall family also included a mother and daughter pairing, Jennifer and Susannah Sendall, taking part in the main competition as well.

Media Frenzy

Both uses of the word media were in evidence as most forms of media were represented. Artists using oils, paints, pastels, pens, papier mache, glue, grass, and even a beer can, meant mixed media was much in evidence in the creation of art works. Meanwhile, radio, TV, photographers and videographers grabbed footage of the rolling hills and heath filled with artists and families on a fun day out for all.

Cass Art were our sponsors for the event, their mission being to “fill this town with artists”, the hills were indeed filled with artists of all ages and who gratefully received Cass Art discount vouchers and later next week will also be awarded Cass Art prizes to spend online or at Cass Art stores.

Several artists had clearly shopped there before as some Cass Art bags were in evidence on the heath alongside the Paint Out bags.

The public Mousehold works were displayed at OPEN and the main competition artists paintings are on display at various venues across Norwich throughout October and November.

Café Britannia

The Paint Out artists were well fed courtesy of Café Britannia and quite a number of artists turned their backs on Norwich, which at times became contre-jour and instead chose to paint the Victorian Prison or Barracks turned café. The former home of the Royal Norfolk Regiment barracks is an imposing red brick building almost matching the Autumnal colours of the trees in seasonal change.

“Café Britannia is a shabby chic café offering freshly cooked British cuisine. Open 7 days a week, the café is staffed by category D low risk prisoners, that have volunteered to learn new skills, improve their lives and make a fresh start. All tips and profits generated from the café go to rehabilitating prisoners and charitable causes.”

Public Art Exhibition at OPEN

The Paint Out competition artworks will be displayed alongside the core and nocturne painting events of the last few days at the Cathedral Hostry gallery exhibition show of nearly 200 artworks from Saturday 24-30th October. The Mousehold public artworks will be displayed from Tuesday 27th till Saturday 31st October at the OPEN venue (20 Bank Plain, top of London Street, Norwich NR2 4SF).

Following up on our successful mass Sunrise ‘paint out’ as part of Paint Out Wells 2015 we are holding a similar event at Paint Out Norwich, October 22, 1:30-4:30pm. Members of the public of any age or artistic ability are welcome to join dozens of Paint Out competition artists in a mass painting session on Mousehold Heath with its expansive views overlooking the city of Norwich. Already, we are expecting over 80 artists aged 5-85, including 3 generations of one family. Read more about the event here.

You will need to bring your own equipment and meet outside the Cafe Britannia, 3 Britannia Rd, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 4LU.

Several of the famous Norwich School of Artists including John Crome and John Sell Cotman painted Mousehold Heath in the 19th century. Norwich-born novelist, and one time Lord Mayor, RH Mottram was another artist who loved the open space of Mousehold Heath. He once described it as “the property of those who have the privilege of Norwich birth”. Since 1880 it has been public property and a perfect location to paint the wide cityscape of Norwich from.

Paint Out competition participants will have their work exhibited automatically. Other public ‘paint out’ artists should get a Paint Out stamp upon registration at Mousehold and be responsible for returning their work to Norwich. Paint Out is hoping to exhibit for up to a week all of the public art works or as many as space allows at the OPEN venue in Norwich, Oct 25 – Nov 1.

Public artists should affix sufficient secure fixings either on the back of frames or (if unframed on the back of the surfaces) to facilitate hanging. Paint Out has the right to exclude any work that is insufficiently prepared for hanging. We accept that with artists aged from 5-85 these instructions may not apply rigidly to all art works and we will do our best to display everything including younger artworks.
